At her first City Council meeting of 2026, new Mayor Wendy Bucknum wasted no time setting the tone. Her message was clear: Mission Viejo needs to compete—and that means transforming the city into a true hub for business, shopping and entertainment. “A strong local economy means good jobs, thriving businesses and a stable tax base that supports essential city services,” Bucknum said. To get there, she outlined two key goals: building a business-friendly reputation and rebranding Mission Viejo as a go-to destination for retail and recreation. The push comes as neighboring cities ramp up redevelopment efforts, giving residents more places to spend their time—and money. “It’s essential that we keep our centers vibrant,” Bucknum emphasized, “especially as surrounding communities continue to pull people away from Mission Viejo.”

Mission Viejo Animal Services has done it again! Using aerial thermal drone technology, Animal Services officers successfully rescued a lost dog from a remote canyon area following an extensive two-day search. The dog was apparently startled by our recent strong winds and fled into a ravine between Dove Canyon and Coto de Caza. The drone was eventually able to pinpoint the dog’s exact location, and the officers were then guided through the rugged terrain and dense brush to reach and secure the scared pooch. “Mission Viejo Animal Services is proud to support community members when they need it the most,” said Animal Services director Brynn Lavison. Grab your friends and head underground—literally—for a one-of-a-kind concert experience in Mission Viejo. Local band Elevated Measure takes over the acoustically rich Jeronimo Tunnel from 7–8 pm on Friday, January 23, blending American reggae, country and blues into a soulful, toe-tapping sound. Mission Viejo’s newest music venue sits along the Oso Creek Trail near Jeronimo and Arbolitos. Limited street parking is available on Jeronimo, or make a night of it by strolling the trail under the stars. Music, nature and great vibes guaranteed. More info.

Hundreds of residents kicked up their heels at last Saturday’s country-music-themed Night Market. From kids to seniors, folks donned their finest Western wear for an evening of line dancing led by DJ Coral. The event featured over 50 vendors, including artists, craftspeople, and food trucks serving up delicious eats, sweet treats and cold brews from TapTruck OC. When they weren’t two-stepping, many of the kids played games and enjoyed a scavenger hunt while their folks soaked up the lively country vibes under a beautiful night sky. “They need to do this again,” one enthusiastic resident declared—and most people in the crowd would definitely agree!

You may have seen him at the Saturday Farmers Market or around town, offering a heartfelt “God Bless You” with an unmistakable smile. Longtime Mission Viejo resident Vijay Christie may be the happiest man in town. The 76-year-old India native and retired chemical engineer embraced Christianity 45 years ago after accompanying his wife to church. His conversion brought unexpected joy that he now shares with everyone he meets—regardless of their faith. “All the accomplishments in my life are good, but nothing compares to knowing Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior,” Vijay says, beaming. His infectious happiness is a testament to finding purpose and peace.

Don’t miss Mission Viejo High School Drama’s “Let the Light In,” a showcase entirely in the hands of student artists. This two-act production features 11th and 12th-grade theatre students performing scenes from classic and contemporary plays, all hand-picked, cast and directed by seniors. Expect crowd-pleasers like “Clue” and “The Outsiders” alongside classics like Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Whether you love mystery, drama or comedy, there’s something for everyone.
