Hi, . This Father’s Day, I thought about my grandpa Joe. I’m guessing he’s up there somewhere, trying to find the Pearly Gates. His sense of direction was terrible. In this week’s Buzz:

While the U.S. Men’s National Team was suiting up for its World Cup opener against Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, more than 100 kids were on a Mission Viejo pitch with stars from the U.S. Women’s National Team. Bank of America launched its national “Soccer with Us” clinic series June 12 at Saddleback College. USWNT’s Ally Sentnor and Lily Yohannes (pictured, in striped jerseys) ran the drills, coaching kids from the Boys & Girls Club of San Juan Capistrano and the OC Soccer Club through passing, shooting and dribbling. They also shared a few life lessons on balance, focus and teamwork. It was the first of 100-plus “Soccer with Us” clinics BofA has planned nationwide.

The City’s America 250 celebration kicks off on July 4 at the annual Street Faire & Fireworks Spectacular. From noon to 9 PM, Olympiad Rd between Marguerite Pkwy and Melinda Rd will be packed with live entertainment, rides, games, food, and beer and wine. More than 40 vendors will also showcase crafts and gift items. Fireworks will light up the sky over Lake Mission Viejo at 9 PM. Admission is free, and tickets for rides and games will be available for purchase at the event. To reduce traffic and promote eco-friendly transportation, attendees are encouraged to bike to the festivities. A complimentary shuttle will also operate from noon to 8 PM, with stops at 12 locations around the lake. More info.

After closing for a couple weeks to address plumbing repair issues, Coastline Pizza is once again serving its signature pies to grateful customers. If you stopped by for a Shoreline Vodka Pie or Detroit-style Motor City Pepperoni only to be disappointed by locked doors, you weren’t alone. Houston teen Yuvi Agarwal founded the nonprofit Wild Tunes at age 10 to soothe animals in shelters by having young musicians perform live for them. Now Wild Tunes has partnered with Lion’s Heart, a national youth volunteer organization, to connect student musicians in grades 6–12 with shelter performance opportunities across the country. Participants can sign up through the Lion’s Heart dashboard, select a shelter—including Mission Viejo Animal Services—and schedule a live set. “Together, we can uplift and soothe shelter animals while giving students a meaningful way to serve their communities,” said Priyanka Agarwal, executive director of Wild Tunes and Yuvi’s mom.

Since opening its doors in 1976, The Shirt Cannery on Marguerite Pkwy has handled its share of unusual requests. Julie Marshall’s custom-printing shop creates one-of-a-kind banners, shirts, hats and other items for sports teams, businesses, schools and individual customers. Over the years, she produced more than 20,000 items for the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. One local romantic asked her to hide an engagement ring inside a tin can for his surprise proposal. Maria Jose Espinosa was altering her own clothes by hand before most kids her age knew how to thread a needle. The Pavion Park 17-year-old, soon to be a senior at Tesoro High School, began modifying her clothes as a tween and sharpened her skills after receiving a sewing machine for her 13th birthday. She later took courses at Saddleback College to learn professional techniques, which she now puts to use through her new business, Maria’s Alterations. Ranger has already been through more than any puppy should. The eight-month-old mixed breed arrived at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center with scars on his muzzle where it had been tied shut and a leg injury so severe it cannot be saved. The center’s nonprofit partner, Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), will sponsor the amputation, but Ranger needs a foster home where he can recover afterward. Despite his rough start, Ranger is energetic, friendly with other dogs and ready to thrive. He just needs someone in his corner to help him get there. They were found huddled in the middle of a San Clemente street—five baby skunks with their mother nowhere to be found. That’s when San Clemente Animal Services called in backup. Mission Viejo Animal Services took in the six-week-old kits through its Mission for Wildlife program. During their time in care, the little stinkers were taught essential foraging and survival skills until they hit a healthy release weight. All five were then returned to the same area they were found—good news for the neighborhood ecosystem. Skunks control insects and rodents, improve soil and aid plant growth.
