City council says no to kratom

The City Council has unanimously voted to advance an ordinance prohibiting the sale and distribution of kratom in Mission Viejo, joining neighboring cities Dana Point, Newport Beach, Oceanside and San Diego in enacting similar bans. The FDA has identified kratom, a Southeast Asian tropical plant, as having opioid-like properties that threaten public health. The abuse of kratom in the U.S. has increased markedly in recent years. Its leaves produce stimulant effects at low doses and sedative effects at high doses. Regular use can lead to addiction, psychosis, hallucinations, and physical symptoms including nausea, seizures and liver toxicity. More info.

All hands on deck!
Avast, young sailors! The Lake Mission Viejo Junior Sailing Team is calling. PEOPLE & PLACES
Awakening the spark within
Rabbi Zalman Marcus is not your typical religious leader. With his wife, Bassie, he founded the Chabad Jewish Center of Mission Viejo 30 years ago. While adhering to strict Jewish laws, the Chabad welcomes residents of all Jewish traditions—and all faiths. “We’re not here to tell people how they should practice,” says Rabbi Marcus. “It’s about awakening the spark within.” To that end, the Chabad offers diverse programming, from Mommy & Me classes to a Schmooze Club for the 55+ crowd. “We're here to be of service to the broadest group of people we can.” More info.

LOCAL SCHOOL LOWDOWN

La Paz continues to make the grade
La Paz Intermediate School has made the honor roll—again. The school has earned the prestigious 2026 California Distinguished School designation, joining an elite group of just 408 schools statewide and 42 in Orange County. “This recognition reflects the dedication of La Paz’s teachers, staff and administrators, who work every day to ensure students reach their full potential,” said superintendent Dr. Crystal Turner. And this is no fluke: La Paz has claimed the honor five times before, in 1990, 1992, 2003, 2007 and 2024. This year, the school was recognized in the Exemplary High Achievers category, which honors schools demonstrating consistently strong achievement and minimal achievement gaps across all state indicators.
