Mission Viejo’s Favorite Pizza: Rubino’s

Readers of Mission Viejo Buzz have cast their vote for the best pizza in town and the winner is: Rubino’s Pizza on Marguerite Pkwy! It was a close call, but ultimately Rubino’s pulled it out on the last day of voting. What makes this nearly 50-year-old pizzeria a slice above the rest? Maybe it’s the chewy, scratch-made crust, hand-stretched and baked until its dark and crispy. Or the tomato sauce prepared from a secret family recipe. Or the 100% Wisconsin mozzarella cheese. Actually, it’s all of the above, plus the always fresh toppings. No wonder Rubino’s has built a loyal following that spans generations. Congrats to owner Jay Bognar and his entire team for reigning supreme in Mission Viejo! 26012 Marguerite Pkwy, Ste L.

NEWS BITS

Show of force at National Night Out
It’s not every day you see Orange County Fire Authority and Orange County Sheriff helicopters parked on a local ball field, but there they were last Thursday evening. Not to worry—it was all part of the National Night Out celebration at Marty Russo Youth Athletic Park. Our local fire and law enforcement teams attended in force, showcasing the many ways they keep our community safe. Government agencies and service organizations joined them, along with area businesses including The Home Depot, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods. For the hundreds of residents in attendance, it was definitely a night to remember.

The wild west will come alive on Saturday, August 9, at the Prelude in the Park “Dust Off Your Boots” event preceding that evening’s Symphony in the City concert. Attendees can ride a mechanical bull, pan for gold, and try their hand at steer roping and cow milking. A Children’s Music Playground, bounce houses, petting zoo and carnival games will add to the excitement. Multiple chuck wagons—er, food trucks—will also be on hand. Last but not least, Kenny Hale and his band will perform live, recreating the sound of classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Journey, Styx and more. All of this leads up to the main event: Pacific Symphony’s performance of popular classics from beloved musicals and sing-along patriotic songs, led by assistant conductor Jacob Sustaita. Prelude in the Park: 4-7 PM. Symphony in the City: 7-8:30 PM. More info. Oso Viejo Community Park. 24932 Veterans Way.
Something’s fishy about the next full moon
This month’s full moon, dubbed the “Sturgeon Moon,” will light up Mission Viejo skies on Saturday night. Native American tribes named it after the large sturgeon fish that were easiest to catch during late summer in the Great Lakes and other nearby waterways. While we’re fresh out of sturgeon here in SoCal, it should be perfect weather for moon-gazing on Saturday, so mark your calendars for some stellar nighttime entertainment. Fun fact: This month’s full moon is also sometimes called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon. Whatever you call it, it’s sure to be a catch!

PEOPLE & PLACES
The humanistic art of Yang Dong
One look at Yang Dong’s bronze sculptures and you immediately sense the artist’s deep affection for animals. The Mission Viejo resident melds classic sculptural language with Eastern humanistic qualities to showcase the grace and intelligence of his subjects, particularly dogs and horses. “Their loyalty, agility, beauty, and even their sense of humor captivates me,” says Yang, a native of Tianjin, China. “They’ve offered me a new perspective on the world and helped resolve many of my inner struggles.” The artist’s work is currently on display at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach and on his website. When he’s not creating award-winning art, Yang and his wife can often be found boating on Lake Mission Viejo or walking the Oso Creek Trail.

Joint Chiropractic leaves MV
The Joint Chiropractic clinic in Mission Viejo shut its doors on August 1. Patients are encouraged to visit the Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo or Irvine locations of the national chain, which currently numbers more than 900 offices and performs more than four million spinal adjustments each year.
