Rotary Club Keeps on Rolling at 50

The Mission Viejo Rotary Club rolled onto the local scene in 1975 and shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, the organization is embarking on its next 50 years with new leadership and a slew of activities. In June, LaVal Brewer was named new president of the club. This week is a dedication ceremony for the new Peace/Mental Health Awareness Pole—designed as a symbol of hope and healing—in the Rotary Garden on the Oso Creek Trail. The group will then be selling beer, wine and water at the Symphony in the Cities concert on Saturday, August 9, on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Community Park. More info.

NEWS BITS

Berlin brings the ‘80s back to the lake

Saturday night’s Lake Mission Viejo Summer Concert series brought iconic ‘80s band Berlin to the stage in a show that felt both nostalgic and fresh. The band opened with the hits “Masquerade” and “No More Words,” with lead singer Terri Nunn looking and sounding spectacular. Before their closing song, “Sex (I’m a…),” Berlin delivered rocking covers of The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary,” Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” Everyone on stage and in the audience seemed to be having a great time. At one point, Nunn even asked if the band could do a residency here in Mission Viejo. Yes, please!

Ahoy, mateys! The cardboard boat derby is nigh

Ready to test your shipbuilding skills? Then sign up for the annual Cardboard Boat Derby, happening this Saturday at Sierra Recreation Center! Each team of four gets cardboard, duct tape, a utility knife and one hour to craft a seaworthy vessel. The winner is the boat that stays afloat the longest. Will your cardboard canoe conquer the pool or become submarine material? Entry is $30 per team, with two age divisions (6-10 and 11+). Before the big race, enjoy swimming, games and activities. More info. 26887 Recodo Ln.

Give your books a second chapter

PEOPLE & PLACES

Janae Reed: Call her coach

Ohana Fitness is not your typical gym. What started as a gathering of moms in a neighbor’s Mission Viejo garage has grown into a community of empowered rock stars. Here, confidence and overall health are prioritized equally with building strength and mobility. Guiding it all is Janae Reed, a mother of three with a lifelong passion for sports and fitness. A certified personal trainer and women’s fitness specialist, Janae offers group classes, personal training sessions, and remote fitness and nutrition coaching five days a week. Most importantly, she provides the encouragement and support to become the most “bad ass” version of yourself. “I’ve turned my passion into purpose, building a community where you come as you are and every effort builds strength, confidence and a healthier life,” says Coach Janae. San Diego Padres pitcher David Morgan

David Morgan shining in the show

Mission Viejo High School graduate David Morgan made his first Major League start for the San Diego Padres on July 6 against the Texas Rangers. The right-handed pitcher threw 1⅓ innings, allowing one earned run in a no-decision. Morgan’s journey to “the show” wasn’t conventional. After going undrafted in 2022 following his college career at Orange Coast College and Hope International University, he signed with the Padres as a free agent. He worked his way through their minor league system before making his MLB debut as a reliever in May. The 25-year-old is currently 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA.

THANKS FOR READING THE BUZZ!

The Berlin concert on Saturday night was the first time I’d attended a show at the lake. What a fun evening! There are two more free concerts at the lake this summer; get a group of friends together, take some food and some wine, and go see one of them! It’s an awesome perk for Mission Viejo residents.
