Hi, . Valentine’s Day is here once again. Nothing says “I love you” like panic-buying chocolate in a heart-shaped box. In this week’s Buzz:

Some folks have a resort-style pool and spa in their backyard. Sue and Vic Thies had another idea: the creation of the Too Much Fun Railroad. In 2010, they began to transform their backyard on Buscador into a wonderland of tableaus through which 11 different trains would eventually travel. Over the course of more than 1,700 feet of track, the TMFRR journeys past Utah red rock mountains, Route 66, more than 150 buildings and over multiple steel arch bridges. The fun continues after dark with more than 100,000 LEDs illuminating the entire railroad. Sue says the rewards of operating the TMFRR are many: “It’s mentally therapeutic, physically demanding and a great social activity.” All aboard! More info.

2025 was a busy year for the Orange County Fire Authority in Mission Viejo. Of the 9,250 calls answered by local firefighters and paramedics, 67 were for fires, 6,750 for medical assistance, and 2,433 for miscellaneous help—from water leaks to hazmat situations and traffic accidents. OCFA division chief Cheyne Maule says that Mission Viejo benefits from regional support, with engines in San Juan Capistrano, Coto de Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Trabuco Canyon boosting coverage when needed. Even better news: Response times dropped to 8:26 from dispatch to arrival—18 seconds faster than 2023 and beating the county’s 8:30 benchmark. Fast response saves lives!

Crucero Park just got a major makeover—and kids are loving it. The redesigned playground features exciting climbing elements, fresh play surfaces and modern sunshades to create an inspiring space for all ages. Refreshed landscaping adds a finishing touch. Many residents know Kwik Kopy, a full-service print shop on Marguerite Pkwy that’s been around since the 1980s. But did you know that its management changed in June 2023? Saddleback College’s Commercial Music program prepares students for careers as music professionals. This Thursday, February 12, in the school’s McKinney Theatre, students and alumni of the program will go head-to-head in a Battle of the Bands. Hosted by and featuring blues musician Neil Levin (pictured), himself a graduate of the program, the battle showcases a variety of musical genres, including hard rock, math rock, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll. After the final performance, the audience will vote on their favorite artist of the night. “We’re a tight-knit community of musicians who love Saddleback,” says Neil, “and this is a great way to showcase how the Commercial Music program provided the foundation for some exciting musical careers.” More info.📍 28000 Marguerite Pkwy.

Bing Cheng, a Trabuco Hills High School senior, has received the Regeneron Scholar award from the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Often called the “Junior Nobel Prize” because many alumni have gone on to win actual Nobel Prizes and other major scientific awards, the honor is bestowed upon just 300 students nationwide. THHS chemistry teacher Kelli Gaines was also recognized as a Regeneron Teacher of Merit. Bing and Mrs. Gaines’ work contributed to the school earning a “triple crown” of sorts—it was recognized as a 2026 Regeneron Scholar School. Congrats to all!

Mission Viejo High School’s freshman and sophomore drama classes are taking the stage with Rotten Apples, a family-friendly children’s show directed by Chris Hixson. This darkly funny and fast-paced production brings together familiar fairy tale characters in a night full of mystery, surprises and unexpected twists. Performances are February 11 and 12 at 7 PM in the Performing Arts Theater. Come support MVHS’s youngest performers as they bring energy and humor to the stage.
